Let's explore metamorphic rock types!

This website will guide you through identifying different metamorphic rocks :)

ROCK TYPE #1

Site hosted by Neocities

Rock Name: Conglomerate

Grain size, grain shape, and sorting:

  1. Course–grained
  2. Larger clasts are rounded to well-rounded
  3. Sorting is moderate
  4. Rocks have large clasts and finer matrix

Other properties:

  1. Sedimentary rock
  2. Clastic texture
  3. Composed of various rocks and minerals
  4. Gray, brown, white, yellow

Where did it form and why?

Conglomerates form in high energy sedimentary environments with fast moving water or strong currents that can transport and deposit the rock. This formation happens because round clasts have been transported and abrasion by water has smoothed any sharp edges. The coarse grain shows that the high energy moved the fragments. The sediments are deposited in places with lower energy to settle the material. Over time the sediments are compacted and cemented through lithification into solid rock.
